Kennel Newcomer Lands Lucrative Rocky Cup

BACK home at Sarina, Steve Scott proved he could still churn out a Group star when kennel newcomer Inevitable won the Rockhampton Cup Friday night.

BACK home at Sarina after a long stint training professionally at Churchable, Steve Scott proved he could still churn out a Group star when kennel newcomer Inevitable got the better of favourite Bear's Bullet to win the Group 2 Rockhampton Cup (510m) on Friday night.

It was a big night for Scott who also trained Farmor Iconic to win the Carnival Sprint final (407m).

Inevitable (Sennachie-Velocity Chance) was bought by Scott late in March from breeder and owner Steve Williams after he had a fabulous career in the Selena Zammit kennel.

He scored by half-a-length in the Cup final, beating Bear's Bullet with three-quarters of a length to Tagovailoa in third and Heffernan Bale inches away in fourth.

Scott bought Inevitable after he had finished fourth in the Bundaberg Cup Consolation behind Oh Minnie on March 11.

He had been a finalist in the G3 Bundaberg Cup and Listed Ipswich Young Guns in 2023 for the Zammit kennel.

He had been a 29.66 and 29.73 winner at Albion Park for Zammit.

Inevitable has been a goldmine buy for Scott with his quick 29.46 Rocky Cup heat win and now the Group 2 final earning $80,000 in those two starts.

“I was talking to Steve (Williams) a while back,” said Scott.

“We've been tied up with him for a while and he mentioned we could do a bit of a deal with Inevitable.”

Scott trained a number of Rockhampton Cup finalists in the past but Inevitable is his first winner.

“I can remember driving from Sarina years ago to Rocky to win a race worth $300,” he said.

“The Cup was worth $6000 all those years ago and who would have thought it would ever be $75,000.”

The victory came after a difficult lead-up.

“I drove him to Rocky for as trial, the track was a bog, so I turned around and went home,” said Scott.

“I drove back the next day and got to trial him then.

“When he came up with the seven in the final., Steve Williams said Michael and Selena Zammit always liked the dog from a wide draw. That made me confident.

“Down the back straight when he and Bear's Bullet settled down to a head and head battle, it was something else.”

Just a length and a half separated the first four in the final.

Scott will not look to the Townsville Cup for Inevitable.

“Right now I will be happy to just get home and celebrate,” he said. “Steve (Williams) is over the moon.”

He has been back in Sarina for the past 15 months.

“I wasn't going to get back into training,” he said. “But, I have got 16 in the kennel now.”
